Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn once made the Statement… “Let the Lie come into the World.Let the lie come into the world. Let it even triumph. But not through me. The simple step of a courageous individual is not to take part in the lie.”
Throughout the Churches in America over the last one hundred years, increasing criticism of our forefathers has grown significantly. Few in the churches today know the great heritage of America and fewer still defend it, especially those in the pulpits. It is alleged our forefathers went to war over a pittance of a tax. “WHAT?” they cry. “Our forefathers rebelled and bloodied the landscape over a pittance of a tax?” Others maintain a Romans 13: 1 (as usual) to say our forefathers had no right to stand against King George and his parliament. Still others are mistaught that America had no Christian heritage worth defending today. Yet the unanimous testimony of the enemies of our forefathers in the years leading up to our War for Independence, as well as the years following the year 1775, is that the churches in America were at the very center of the storm decrying evil… starting with the sins of the people and extending the same standard to those who ruled us.
The truth is, our forefathers were taught by the pulpits of their generation – pulpits heavily influenced by the “Great Awakening.” (1735-1775) Note the phrase used by secular and Christian historians “Great” and “Awakening.” Americans have been asleep and allowed a Christian civilization planted on our shores 150 years earlier, to begin to lapse, sliding into apostasy. Sermons were preached pointing to Ezekiel 13 and Job 1 which frightened our people because of a singular term emphasized in those two passages and conceptually epitomized all throughout the bible – “Hedge.”
In Job 1, God asks Satan if he is aware of Job and Satan makes it very clear, that despite his roaming throughout all the earth, he knew exactly who Job was. Job had been a hedge in
- Defense of Justice
- Upholding Civil Liberties of the Widow, orphan and poor
- Defender of Righteousness in the Land
- A Judge who could not be purchased
- A man of stature defending society around him from moral erosion
- A successful entrepreneur
- A man who loved his family
Of course, Satan wanted this man, and for all Satan’s talk about roaming the earth, he was targeting Job.
NOTE WHERE SATAN ATTACKED…
“… you have put a hedge around him…” was Satan’s complaint
Satan was given authority to take the hedge of protection from Job to attack him. The Prophet Ezekiel addressed the same hedge, called a wall (figuratively speaking). Ezekiel warned the people the hedge of protection surrounding their nation, God had put in place was being taken down by the devil from within the nation. False prophets, ungodly teachers (male and female) were “daubing the wall with untempered mortar.” In other words, there were multiple crisis that were fallen upon Israel in which the hedge of protection was being torn town. So, they were attempting- without the truth of God’s Holy Laws- to put up some sort of defense to preserve quality of life. And God said he would tear down their wall- their hedge of protection- the only antidote being they must repent, which they refused.
Our forefathers of 1775 heard sermons warning the hedge of protection was being torn down. It is for that reason they addressed evils like the Stamp Act, Townsend Acts, Quebec Act, the treason in the restoration of Lewisburg Fortress, The Intolerable Acts, the Quartering of troops in their homes and streets, and disarmament of the people by the British. Our forefathers acted in many areas with prescience, stopping evil before it matured (Hence drawing modern critics who say the issues weren’t great enough for their reaction.) They acted to stop the maturing of evil. So must we. At the heart of the storm is the Church of Christ. Where are our Watchmen on the Walls? Our watchmen are no good if the enemy breeches the walls before the Watchmen cry out.
We are long past the hedge being breached. The hedge about us has been torn down.
