Memorial Day is a holiday unlike any other in history the world. It is a day of honoring our veterans who “stood in the gap” in the defense of their country against dictators, terrorists and maligning influences of all kinds. It is a day to remember those veterans whose service led to the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

However, there is a unique understanding that came with the origin of the holiday. Too often, writers compare the way Americans honor those who gave their lives for this nation with the way in which civilizations of the past such as the Romans and the Greeks, the Chinese, the French and so many others going back to the beginning of recorded history. But there is NOTHING to compare. Rather, Memorial Day stands in CONTRAST to civilizations of the past who honored their soldiers in the performance of their duties.

In this two-part series Vision Viewpoint honors sacrifices of the men and women of our Armed Services. And though this particular holiday had its origin in the immediate post-Civil War grieving of the nation, the holiday nonetheless unites its testimony with that which preceded even that terrible conflict.

We hope you enjoy this two-part series, as Vision Viewpoint honors the holiday which commemorates the service and sacrifice of those who have gone before us.

For Vision Viewpoint,

Dr. Wayne C. Sedlak
