Memorial Day is UNIQUE in the history of nations. There really is no other holiday like it. In this message on this Sunday morning, we honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice but we testify there is a foundation and under-girding given in the Testimony of this wonderful beloved holiday which needs to be rehearsed over and over again so both we and future generations do not lose the Bible lessons that stand, NOT comparatively with the practices of other nations in history but rather stand IN CONTRAST to their observances and behavior.

Memorial Day provides us this Sunday morning with a theme so often pursued in the word of God. Indeed, our forefathers – being so heavily influenced by the Christian Church ever since the colonial beginnings of this great nation – were influenced by the Pulpits and worship of the Christian Church in the formation of our nation.

Memorial Day had its beginnings during the immediate post-Civil War grief of the American people.  They were emerging from a war torn nation and during that time, with a longing to look back in attempts to recapture foundational truths that had made the country so great and so powerful in such a very short period of time they established what we now know as Memorial Day.

There was also the grief of the Christian Church in both the North and the South, where men and women prayed to the the Lord for forgiveness for loss of a nation factionalized, savagely torn, now seeking to re-stitch what was left of the “tattered garment” called America.

Too, the unofficial holiday we now call Memorial Day grew in importance in the minds and hearts of the people of this country in the century and half since its beginnings. It was drawn out of biblical moorings which established sound foundations that  had once broken with the all too human failings of previous civilizations, and being enlightened by God’s Holy Word, established the testimony far beyond what many today in the churches understand.

It is this UNIQUE Testimony provided by the Christian church through its use of the Word of the Lord which gave America not just a special holiday but a special understanding and ethic that sets sacrifice and the very purpose the soldiers, sailors and other armed service personnel apart from all nations throughout history.

We leave it to you to be the judge if this truly is a Unique Testimony set aside in one Holy Day.

May God bless you in your understanding of His Holy Word.
