Faith is a courage to act despite appearances. To those returning from the Captivity of Babylon, the appearance was that of a Jerusalem and Judea in complete ruins… with hostile people contesting the very presence and existence of the few faithful people who had returned to build the temple in the land.
Nonetheless, the Prophet foretold the opposition and terrible circumstances compared to a “mountain” would become a “plain,” in front of the few faithful. The faith of those Jews like Zerubbabel and the other returning exiles, the Apostle Paul, and others is always a call to “not despise the day of small things.”
With God attending to the “small things” of our heart and walk, He invariably makes our presence a veritable hurricane before which evil is swept aside. As the prophet Zachariah foretold
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.” (Zachariah 4:6)
“The day of small things” was exactly the beginning in the lives of the faithful, such as Zerubbabel and his fellow few exiles, the Apostle Paul in Acts 23 and others throughout history and the Scriptures.
This message highlights Christ’s words…
I am the vine; you are the branches… If you abide in me and my word abides in you, you shall ask what you will and it will be done unto you. (John 15)
